Amazon echo review

Alexa review

Our Amazon Echo was delivered a few months ago. When I got the email inviting us to get one I thought. Cool! But wasn't sure what it could do. It wasn't a lot of money so I said, "Why not?"

The name the Echo responds to is Alexa and I will refer to the Echo as she. We listen to the news everyday, listen to music at meal times, have dance parties in the afternoon. She tells us jokes, answers our questions about all things trucks (or anything else we want to know), tells us the weather. Now that we set up an iheartradio account it plays pretty much everything, with each email update it is getting better. Alexa can now find some wireless appliances like our Hue bulbs, so far she can't really do anything with them but I'm excited to see what she can do in the future.

I asked my 3 year old what he thinks about the echo "good. It makes music and tells about fire trucks and ambulance and street sweeper and dump trucks." There you have it, from the mouth of babes.

It would be nice if
You could program it. In the morning I'd like it to say "good morning Scribs, the temperature is, would you like to hear the news?"
Change its name.
Check the status of Amazon orders, subscribe and save etc (all things we use), although it has just been updated to be able to re-order things from past orders.
Set actual reminders "Alexa, remind me at 11:45 am Friday to call my mom"
Perhaps one day!

The biggest down side is at times she can't understand what we're saying which gets super-frustrating. "Alexa, play iheartradio Hozier"
"Do you want me to add a station for How do I love you?"
"No."
"Alexa, play iheartradio Hozier"
"Do you want me to add a station for Brian Adams?"
"No!"
This happens sometimes when we want the news, ask questions. Maybe we're expecting a bit too much at times. If the volume is too loud, she can't hear us at all.

For $200 it was definitely worth it for us. We've had it for a few months in use it all the time. Yes, we could just use our phones or computer for most of what we use it fore but I like having a compact tower that looks decent and isn't a phone. We bought it for the potential which may or may not have been a wise move as technology advances this model, I'm sure, will be obsolete. As I said, we're happy with it. It was well worth the $200.

Monday motivation

bumble bee

This weekend was great! It was warm and sunny. The kids played outside and so did the chickens!

This week my to-do list is longer than usual as my parents are coming on Wednesday. You know the drill, company's coming cleaning! I'm not looking forward to washing the floors. We have hand-scraped wood in the kitchen, dining room and play room and there's crumbs and bits of sand in between them. How the heck do you get that mess out? I've vacuumed and swept. Hmmm, perhaps Pinterest will know.

My deck is kind of a mess, there's toys, random junk and bird poop all over. I bet a certain 3 year old will hose it down for me.

I'm looking forward to having help around the house! What needs to get done and what is being accomplished are two very different animals. How does anyone get anything done with non-nappers?

chickens week 10!

Here's our new little lady, Peepers, the Wellsummer. The chickens spent their first week in the coop, it's much better than the brooder.

wellsummer pullet

Isn't she pretty? Our neighbor brought her over last night and so far she has just been on the roosts, I'm sure she'll come around soon.

Chicks 10 weeks

This is what happens every time we open the people-door. Almost all the chickens come over to see what's going on. Then they stand right on the edge and look around.

10 week buff orpington

4 week khaki campbell

Then the jerky-ducks start pushing the chickens out. They are kind of bullies! I think it's hilarious.

10 week chickens

Our Red Sex Link, Nancy Drew (the smaller one) and the other with no name are the first to really roost. Nancy Drew hangs out on the roost and no-name likes to sit on the frame work inside the coop.

10 week free range

And this happens when the ducks get too-pushy. I think everyone has had a little bit of outside time, in 2 week we'll start letting them have real outside time and work our way up to outside all day.

Check out the coop tour on Wednesday!

Baby knits!

I have no WIPS for this Wednesday, I figured I'd look ahead to my next project.
Some friends of ours are having some babies this summer and fall. Now that I have nothing in terms of WIPS (except fixing all the ends of the under the sea blanket) I'm looking forward to making some teeny tiny things. I have about 30 things I'd like to make in my ravelry queue (and of course, no yarn to make them). Good thing these people live in New England with seasons!
Decisions, decisions.

Goodbye garbage hill

We discovered that what we had thought was just a place the previous owner had fires was actually their trash burning pile. Had we known that, we would have had it removed before we bought the farm. Lesson learned. This is definitely a job we knew that we'd have to call someone to take care of.

trash pile

We were planning on putting berries there, but put them elsewhere. We are put the chicken coop over there but then we discovered the disaster. After a little digging around (literally) we discovered that we have a giant burnt trash pile. Scribs dug down about 3 feet and it's full of nails, broken glass, melted plastic and who knows what else.

Burned stump

concrete block
That whole L shape is full of junk. There is concrete in there and rocks and who knows what else. Whats with the giant concrete cube? Beats me! Oh the treasure that must be in there!

rotten stump

And then there is the lovely stump that grows mushrooms every time it rains. That needed to go before the chickens are let loose. Chickens aren't the brightest birds and will eat mushrooms given the chance. The stump was huge! The hole was big enough to bury a smart car.

The lovely tractor tire that was dug up! There was a buried TRACTOR TIRE! What?!

All that dirt was from digging up the stump. I wish I would have been able to get better pictures but you know, kids to watch, things to do!

More random trash, bricks, metal bits, thankfully nothing that would have caused a serious problem.

Yes that is a garden hose and parts of old clay pipes. I found more pipes in the garden. The thing that looks like a bone is a part of the stump roots. The man dug a hole about 20 feet deep to get that sucker out.

Several dump truck trips to the dump to get rid of all the trash and several trips to get clean fill. And Garbage Hill is no more!

Ta-Da! Much better! Now we're waiting for the grass to go in, it's been seeded and watered (constantly).

I am so glad Garbage Hill will be a distant memory and our yard will look normal! We certainly weren't expecting to have to get this done, but it's one of those things that had to be fixed.

computer update, now I'm lost!

Of course, I updated my iOS now everything has gone pear shaped. All my pre-existing setting are gone, I can't access my photos and over all I'm not too thrilled. No photos equals no posts. I'm sure in a few days I'll have gotten the hang of everything.

Until then, we'll be outside!

Monday motivation

silhouette

Pretty spectacular sunrise, no?

This weekend we moved the chicken coop outside, I got some gardening done, unfortunately I still have 3 or 4 rows left to plant and 8 plants left to transplant. One day it will be finished.

Next week my parents are visiting, that means it's time for the company's coming clean. My house is in a pretty sad state right now. A is done with his afternoon nap and I'm a bit overwhelmed with chores stacking up. Such is life. It will be nice to have some help and keep the kids distracted while I get some much needed work done.

If I get 2 more rows of the garden planted I will be happy.

What have you got going on this week?
